Remember when France-based Roquette announced last year that it has dissolved its microalgae joint venture with Solazyme (Solazyme Roquette Nutritionals LLC)? Well, it’s because Solazyme now has a competition in this area as Roquette announced its newly-started 4,000-5,000 tons/year production unit at its Lestrem, France, industrial site, which will cultivate chlorella by fermentation.
The company also formally launches a new range of nutrients-enriched food ingredients made from the microalgae under the brand algility™. The line of products include whole algal flour, whole algal protein, and algility™ chlorella.
By the way, Solazyme and Roquette are not the only companies in the microalgae-based food ingredients space. DSM’s Nutritional lipids portfolio, which it acquired from the former Martek Biosciences, includes infant formula, and nutritional and dietary supplements to the food and beverage markets, even including pet foods.
