  • Danish biorefinery receives EU funding

    The EU Commission has awarded €39 million in funding from the NER300 program to Maabjerg Energy Concept, a consortium of companies that include DONG Energy, Novozymes, and local utilities, Vestforsyning, Struer Forsyning and waste management company Nomi, towards the construction of a 80m liters/year cellulosic biorefinery in western Denmark. Today, most of the 1st generation bioethanol additives used in European gasoline is imported – often made by US corn or South American sugar canes. The partners behind the Maabjerg Energy Concept consortium are currently working on the third and final version of the project business plan.

    The blog has covered rhamnolipids in the past but so far the last information I got was in 2012 when a company called AGAE Technologies shipped its first laboratory research-grade rhamnolipid.     Further catching up to news from last week, BioAmber announced that it has expanded its take-or-pay contract with Vinmar International with a total 210 ktpa bio-succinic acid/bio-BDO supply for 15 years. Under the new contract, Vinmar has committed to purchase 10 ktpa of bio-succinic acid from BioAmber Sarnia, a joint venture with Mitsui & Co. The succinic acid will come from BioAmber Sarnia’s 30 ktpa plant that is currently under construction in Sarnia, Canada.     Synthetic biology company, Intrexon Corporation, says its Industrial Products Division has achieved the bioconversion of methane to farnesene in the lab. Farnesene is a key building block chemical for diesel fuel, and also for other lubricants and specialty products, including cosmetics, rubber, and plastics. This is the second product, following isobutanol, which Intrexon has upgraded from natural gas employing its unique cellular engineering capabilities. Intrexon is developing microbial cell lines genetically enhanced to convert methane to higher carbon content compounds at ambient temperatures and pressures, thereby reducing the significant expenditures compared to standard gas-to-liquid (GTL) processes. Instead of producing its own glycerine-based PDO (1,3 propanediol), France-based METEX decided to instead exclusively license its technology to SK Chemicals, and therefore the company has terminated its planned PDO facility in Malaysia as well as all other discussions of potential PDO partner negotiations.
