    POET-DSM starts cellulosic ethanol plant

    .

The biofuels world has been been abuzzed recently with the grand opening of POET-DSM’s cellulosic ethanol plant, dubbed Project Liberty, which is considered the first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant in the US to use corn waste as a feedstock. The 20 million gallons/year plant (expandable to 25 mgpy) located in Emmetsburg, Iowa, has now officially…

Liquid by-products slow biofuels process – PNNL

    .

Scientists from the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (DOE-PNNL) discovered that water in the biofuel conversion process helps form an impurity which, in turn, slows down key chemical reactions. The study examines the conversion of bio-oil, produced from biomass such as wood chips or grasses, into transportation fuels. Researchers used computer simulations to explore…

    Why Tetra Pak chooses renewables?

    .

Tetra Pak is making a case on why the company is now using renewable-based materials in some of its packaging and has recently released a new white paper examining the use of materials in packaging that can be regrown or replenished naturally as a solution to the planet’s growing resource scarcity and to sustain the future…

Pine Chemicals GHG study now available

    .

It has been awhile since I last covered the tall oil market that includes crude tall oil (CTO), tall oil rosin (TOR), and tall oil fatty acid (TOFA). In my past experience, it has been difficult to get information on this industry as pulp and paper chemicals companies are not that many and they are…

BIOME VIDEO: Lignin as bioplastic feedstock

    .

Hello from the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Initiative’s (ACSGCI) 18th annual Green Chemistry & Engineering conference. I will be listening this morning to a presentation about lignin bio-oil as styrene alternative from researchers at the Department of Biomolecular Engineering, University of Delaware, and I saw this video from UK-based Biome Bioplastics about their lignin…

    Enerkem starts commercial waste-to-biofuels plant

    .

Enerkem officially commissioned last week its first commercial biorefinery in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, that will produce biofuels and chemicals using municipal waste. The facility, operated by Enerkem Alberta Biofuels, will have a capacity of up to 38 million liters/year initially producing biomethanol.  A module converting the biomethanol into advanced ethanol will be added by the…
