Just got this news today while attending the INFOCAST Biobased Summit in San Diego. Calysta announced that it will open its first R&D and pilot facility in the UK to produce its methanotrophs-based protein meal, FeedKind™ protein, a non-GMO alternative to fishmeal. FeedKind™ is currently approved for sale in the European Union.
Calysta has received a conditional award of up to £2.8 million Exceptional Regional Growth Fund (eGRF) grant subject to due diligence from the UK Government. The project is expected to create up to 39 positions. The facility will be located at the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) site at Teesside. Calysta plans to install a novel loop reactor adjacent to CPI’s existing National Industrial Biotechnology Facility 2 (NIBF2) facility. The loop reactor will incorporate Calysta’s gas fermentation technology.
The salmon industry in the UK alone is expected to grow by 50% by 2020. Calysta expects to soon announce plans for its first commercial facility, most probably located in the US.
