Avantium, Origin Materials form FDCA deal

I asked an AI program to create a blog post of Avantium and Origin Materials’ recent press release about their FDCA partnership deal, and this is what came up:

—-
Avantium, a leading technology company, has recently announced a partnership with Origin Materials, a sustainable materials company, to accelerate the mass production of FDCA and PEF for advanced chemicals and plastics. The partnership is aimed at revolutionizing the industry by providing a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics and chemicals.

FDCA, or furandicarboxylic acid, is a building block for PEF, or polyethylene furanoate, which is a bio-based, fully recyclable, and biodegradable plastic. PEF has several advantages over traditional petroleum-based plastics, including its ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and its superior performance in various applications such as packaging, fibers, and films.

Avantium and Origin Materials will be working together to scale up the production of FDCA and PEF. Avantium has developed a proprietary technology called the YXY process, which converts plant-based sugars into FDCA and other chemicals. Meanwhile, Origin Materials has developed a platform technology that uses wood residues to produce chemicals and materials that can replace traditional petroleum-based products.

The partnership between Avantium and Origin Materials is expected to bring significant benefits to the industry. By working together, the companies can leverage their respective expertise to develop a cost-effective and sustainable solution for the production of FDCA and PEF at scale. This will not only help reduce the environmental impact of plastics and chemicals but also create new opportunities for the development of sustainable materials and products.

The demand for sustainable materials is increasing rapidly, driven by concerns about the environmental impact of traditional plastics and chemicals. The partnership between Avantium and Origin Materials is a significant step forward in addressing this challenge. The companies are committed to using their innovative technologies to drive the development of sustainable materials and accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

In conclusion, the partnership between Avantium and Origin Materials is an exciting development for the sustainable materials industry. By working together, the companies can create a cost-effective and sustainable solution for the production of FDCA and PEF, which has the potential to revolutionize the industry and help reduce its environmental impact.

Not bad, but a bit bland and missing important information, I think. Maybe my blogging job is still secure enough, hopefully until my retirement. Here is some information that the AI missed:

  • The partnership will include a non-exclusive industrial technology license agreement that will enable Origin Materials to convert its CMF (chloromethylfurfural) into FDCA using relevant parts of Avantium’s YXY® process technology (including certain patent rights). The license will be used to design, construct and operate a 100 ktpa facility that will produce, use, sell and convert FDCA manufactured at that facility.
  • Avantium and Origin Materials have also entered a conditional off-take agreement where Avantium will sell, starting this year, FDCA and PEF to Origin Materials from Avantium’s FDCA pilot plant in Geleen, the Netherlands, and from Avantium’s 5 ktpa FDCA Flagshipship plant currently being built in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, which will commence operation in 2024. Origin Materials will purchase a gradually increasing minimum annual volume of FDCA on a take-or-pay basis.
  • Avantium received an upfront payment of €5 million last year under the terms of the transaction. As a result of the license deal, Origin Materials will pay Avantium a milestone fee of €7.5m.
  • Origin will pay subsequent license fees dependent upon the achievement of different development milestones. Following the commercial operations date of the licensed 100 ktpa facility, Avantium will be eligible to receive royalties for each metric ton of FDCA produced at the licensed plant.
  • The companies also made ancillary arrangements to develop the market for FDCA and PEF applications.

Origin Materials recently completed (mechanically) its Origin 1 plant in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, which will be used to commercially demonstrate Origin Materials’ process and products. The company will probably incorporate Avantium’s FDCA technology in their future commercial facilities (e.g. Origin 2 currently being planned in Lousiana, USA). Or course, I will try to get more information outside of the press release for my Bio-Materials report that will be published next month on Tecnon OrbiChem’s subscription platform. Here is Origin Materials’ recently-released video of their new plant in Sarnia.
