From Sugar to Scale: BASF Boosts US Production of Plant-Based Surfactants

BASF has completed the expansion of its alkyl polyglucosides (APG) production capacity at its Cincinnati, Ohio, facility, strengthening its position in the North American renewable surfactants market. The expansion was originally unveiled in 2023 and is expected to improve regional supply of bio-based, readily biodegradable surfactants used in household and industrial cleaning, personal care, and agricultural applications. BASF markets its APGs under the Glucopon®, Plantaren®, Agnique® PG, and Disponil® APG brands. The company has not disclosed the additional production capacity or investment cost.

The Cincinnati expansion follows BASF’s commissioning of a new APG production facility in Bangpakong, Thailand, in November 2025. Together with its existing manufacturing operations in Düsseldorf, Germany, and Jinshan, China, these investments reinforce BASF’s global APG supply network and reflect a strategy of increasing regional production to serve local customers. The developments also highlight continued investment in renewable surfactants as consumer product manufacturers seek alternatives to conventional petrochemical-based ingredients.

APGs are among the more commercially established categories of bio-based surfactants, produced from renewable glucose and fatty alcohol feedstocks typically derived from starch, coconut oil, and palm kernel oil. Their favorable biodegradability, mildness, and formulation compatibility support applications across consumer and industrial markets. However, the pace of APG market growth will depend on feedstock economics, competitive pricing against conventional surfactants, and expanding demand for renewable ingredients. BASF’s latest investment could improve regional supply competitiveness, although its impact on global APG capacity and pricing remains difficult to quantify without additional production data.

Green D Market Analytics, in collaboration with Neil Burns LLC, examines these developments in its comprehensive 243-page report, “Detailed Assessment of the Renewable Surfactants Market,” released this year. The report evaluates the evolving landscape of renewable surfactant technologies, including APGs, glycolipid biosurfactants, amino acid-based surfactants, and other emerging alternatives, with analysis of market fundamentals, production capacity, applications, pricing, and competitive developments.
