Bio-based chemicals capacity build-up continues

Two big news in the bio-based chemicals sector were announced this month: A planned 65 ktpa fermentation-based 1,4-butanediol (BDO) capacity in Iowa, USA, to be built by a newly-formed joint venture called Qore, and a 75 ktpa polylactic acid (PLA) plant announced by NatureWorks to be built in Nakhon Sawan province in Thailand. Qore is … Continue reading »

AFYREN and DMC in the news

As the blog continues to monitor the commercialization of other niche or novel bio-based building blocks and molecules in the market, here are two interesting news that came my way. AFYREN recently announced that it has secured a long-term agreement on the supply of sugarbeet co-products as feedstock for its AFYREN NEOXY zero-waste, low-carbon biorefinery, … Continue reading »

Forestry Products Market Update

Tecnon OrbiChem’s Bio-Materials newsletter recently published an update from major pine chemicals producers Kraton and Ingevity, as well as covering a company announcement from Fintoil. You can now access this information for free on this link below: Tecnon OrbiChem’s Bio-Materials newsletter also published this month a free-to-access Special Report on cellulose fibres, which is our … Continue reading »

Origin Materials going public

Deals with special purpose acquisition companies (SPAC) seem to be the favourite route these days for bio-based chemical start-ups to shorten the timeframe of the cumbersome IPO (initial public offering) process. The blog reported last month Danimer Scientific’s debut at the New York Stock Exchange after going through a similar process with Live Oak Acquisition … Continue reading »

More bio-based naphtha production ahead

I can barely keep up with news and capacity announcement on renewable diesel/HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) so I’ll just mention two big ones that I came across last week. UPM said last week that it is moving forward with its biofuels growth plans and starts the basic engineering phase of a next-generation biorefinery, which would … Continue reading »

Enerkem and partners to build waste-based methanol plant in Canada

It has been a while since the blog has an update on how Enerkem has been doing. This month, Enerkem, with a group of strategic partners, that include major investor Shell, along with Suncor and Proman, Hydro-Québec supplying green hydrogen and oxygen, and with the support of the Québec and Canadian governments, announced a plan … Continue reading »

More R&D Activities Open Up Lignin’s Feedstock Potential

Lignin is expected to play a significant role as a new chemical feedstock particularly in the formation of supramolecular materials and aromatic chemicals. Lignin is a complex plant-derived macromolecule found in the cell walls of almost all dry plants. It makes up 20-30% of the composition of wood. According to a European Commission (EC) report … Continue reading »

Verdezyne Biochem Equipment for Auction

My apologies for the lack of posting as I’m inundated with webinars and online conferences in the past month (along with other deadlines). However, I cannot let this interesting news (thanks to Biofuel Digest) about an online auction of unused process equipment from the former Verdezyne’s VerdePalm project in Johor, Malaysia. While it saddens me … Continue reading »

EU Bioeconomy reaches EUR 2.4 trillion in 2017

The nova-Institute report commissioned by the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) noted that the analysis of the 2017 Eurostat data shows that the turnover of the total bioeconomy*, including food and beverages and the primary sectors of agriculture and forestry, results in just over 2.4 trillion EUR in the EU-28, meaning an increase by 25% since 2008. … Continue reading »

VIDEO: Phillips 66 to build world’s largest Renewable Fuels Plant

Biorefineries for producing renewable diesel and associated hydrocarbons have been popping up like mushrooms all over the world and it is more interesting when oil companies such as Total in Italy and now Phillips 66 in the USA are converting their old crude oil refineries into biorefineries. Phillips 66, a diversified energy manufacturing and logistics … Continue reading »
