Support the COMPOST Act

The Plant Based Products Council (PBPC) are calling for everyone to support the Cultivating Organic Matter through the Promotion of Sustainable Techniques (COMPOST) Act recently introduced in the House of Representatives by Reps. Julia Brownley (D-CA), Chellie Pingree (D-ME), and Ann Kuster (D-NH) and the U.S. Senate by Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ).

The COMPOST Act would create new grant and loan guarantee programs from the US Department of Agriculture for composting infrastructure projects, including both large-scale composting facilities as well as farm, home, or community-scale projects. It would also add composting as a conservation practice for USDA conservation programs, ensuring both the act of producing compost through recycling of organic material and the use of compost on a farm would qualify as conservation practices.

Increased investment in compost infrastructure can help our country address climate challenges and improve soil and water quality while creating local jobs, particularly in underserved rural and urban communities. Composting is one of the most environmentally friendly means of recycling organics, and this bill represents a powerful opportunity to reach net zero-emission goals.

Currently, compost infrastructure in the USA does not meet the growing demand from individuals and businesses nationwide to compost food scraps and certified compostable packaging. Supporting the COMPOST Act would allow us to take full advantage of this important climate solution.

The recent introduction of the COMPOST Act is an important step toward a greener and more innovative waste reduction and recovery system for our country. Consider adding your voice by clicking the button below. Your support will show lawmakers the importance of increasing access to robust programs that divert compostable materials, including food scraps, yard trimmings, and certified compostable packaging.  As part of the US Composting Infrastructure Coalition (USCIC), PBPC is helping lead the charge in support of the bill to ensure a circular path for certified compostable plant-based materials.
