Every few years, the bio-based chemicals sector seems to produce a fresh “valley of death” peaks. The pattern maintains with companies with promising technologies, patient capital that eventually becomes impatient, difficult first plants, slow customer adoption, and then the inevitable round of exits, sales, shutdowns, bankruptcies and restructurings.

This slide is part of a presentation titled “Renewable Chemicals Market: Geopolitics, Regionalization and Commercial Scale-Up” where Doris De Guzman , principal of Green D Market Analytics LLC, will deliver it at the nova-Institut GmbH‘s Renewable Materials Conference in Germany (Sept. 22–24).
The 2018-2019 wave was a pile-up of scale-up realities. BioAmber’s bankruptcy showed how hard it was to compete in succinic acid when fossil-based economics were unforgiving. Rennovia, Myriant, Rivertop, M&G Bio, Beta Renewables and others ran into different versions of the same problem. There were great ambition, real technical progress but not enough commercial traction or capital stamina to carry the business across the gap.
Is 2026 heading in the same direction? Origin Materials moved toward bankruptcy and an orderly wind-down after struggling to fund and advance its furanics and PET bottle caps platform. PTT MCC Biochem, the Thai biodegradable and bio-based PBS plastic joint venture between PTT and Mitsubishi Chemical, is exiting after production ends this December, and the partners concluded the business could not meet profitability expectations. Viridis Chemical, which tried to commercialize bio-based ethyl acetate, filed for bankruptcy after construction delays, cost overruns and weak economics.
Then there are the strategic exits. Geno, formerly Genomatica, was sold to Again, bringing its long industrial biotech history, IP and know-how into a new home focused on CO2-to-chemicals and biomanufacturing. Anellotech, after years developing catalytic routes from biomass and plastic waste into aromatics, reportedly moved into a creditor process and asset sale. Braskem is a special case and should probably stay with a question mark. Its restructuring is tied to broader debt and petrochemical pressure. Still, because Braskem is one of the few industrial-scale players in bio-based polyethylene, its financial stress matters to the overall health of the bio-based plastic industry.
Steve Weiss , an industry veteran who was associated with the development and eventual sale of Geno, offered a better way to look at this history. He said we should not view these years only as the “valley of death,” but as stages of addressing growth challenges. Some exits are technical failures, some are asset transfers and some are painful but useful consolidations. Some are simply evidence that the technology had value, even if the original business model did not survive.
It takes years, even decades, to separate laboratory projects from scalable businesses, and good ideas from bankable operating models. The next generation will need more than elegant pathways and strong climate logic. It will need advantaged feedstocks, realistic plant designs, customers willing to qualify and pay, partners with balance sheets, and a clearer path from demonstration to cash flow. In this sector, survival is not just about invention but also learning how to adapt and grow.
Doris also participated in Bio Innovations North America on September 10, joining the panel discussion, “Biomanufacturing around the world: Lessons for US scale-ups and international partnership opportunities.” The panel examined industrial biomanufacturing developments across North America, South America, Europe and Asia, as well as the international partnerships that could support US commercialization and scale-up.
Green D Market Analytics can support companies tracking these commercial developments through our custom and multi-client market reports, and our GreenDMA database portal. Coverage includes affected chemical value chains, supplier activities, renewable material developments, technology scale-up, pricing signals, capacity build-out and commercial readiness. Which policies are changing demand? Which materials and chemicals face risk? Which technologies and companies are scaling, and where are new supply chain opportunities forming?
Green D Market Analytics can help provide answers to these questions. The GreenDMA Portal also provides ongoing news and market updates for products and companies that need regular tracking rather than one-off search.
