Plastics Recyclers formed Chemical Recycling Group

This month’s Bio-Materials content is brimming with interesting information ranging from Coca-Cola’s 100% bio-PET, a new ethenolysis project in Europe, the global oleochemicals market going crazy (in terms of pricing anyway),  Total Corbion’s new recycled PLA offering, etc. etc. I am still working on my report but speaking of recycling, I wanted to share this news that came from the Washington, D.C.-based Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR).

APR announced the formation of a Chemical Recycling Research Working Group that will be co-chaired by a veteran from Eastman, Carl Williams, and Greg Janson, president and CEO of Granite Peak Plastics. The goal of the new working group is as follows:

  • Detailing steps to ensure chemical recycling does not result in packaging manufacturers disregarding design for recycling guidelines
  • Identify material that may be better suited for chemical vs. mechanical recycling
  • Review the economic feasibility of chemical recycling
  • Research sortation, transportation, location, and other logistical challenges relative to the stated volume requirements of chemical recycling
  • Develop model bale specifications
  • Identify material applications

Given the growing importance of chemical recycling in the renewables market, I have been monitoring more closely various company announcements and technology developments in this area. Stay tune!
