I forgot to post this after seeing it during one of the Super Bowl commercials. According to Saucony (pronounced sock-a-knee), the company aims to have no plastics, no plastic derivatives and not even bio-plastics in its biodegradable sneakers. The company will use natural materials such as organic cotton, Tencel cellulosic fibers (manufactured by Lenzing AG), wool and natural rubber.
The company is hoping to release its 100% biodegradable shoe collection in late 2020. The shoe-making process is said to be different from current footwear manufacturing practices including using less electricity, not using petroleum-based glues or threads, and using a stitching process from in the late 1800s.
I like the biodegradable aspect of footwear after its end-of-life but I’m curious if there has been an analysis on their lifecycle (especially the use of wool and natural rubber) and most importantly the price range of their shoes.
PS
According to Saucony, no shoe was reportedly wasted in the making of the ad. Most of the shoes were computer-generated imagery and all real shoes were donated at Boston Rescue Mission.
