Green PE coming soon in Thailand

, ,

SCG Chemicals Public Company Limited (SCGC), one of the largest integrated petrochemical companies in Thailand, finalized its planned joint venture agreement with Braskem to produce sugar-based ethylene with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons. The bio-based ethylene will mostly be consumed for the production of polyethylene (PE) under Braskem’s I’m Green™ brand. The project will be located in Map Ta Phut, Rayong, Thailand, and will use the Ethanol-to-Ethylene (ETE) EverGreen™ technology developed and licensed by the partnership of Lummus Technology LLC and Braskem B.V.

The press release did not mention the timeline for the start-up of the facility, although it did say that the goal is to reach 1 million tons of production (under the I’m Greenbrand) by 2030. Braskem’s I’m Green™ production facility in Brazil also produces EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate). The facility recently expanded its capacity from 200 ktpa to 260 ktpa.

I’m Green bio-based PE is used in a variety of products, from packaging for food and beverage to personal and home care products, toys, houseware, plastic bags, etc. It can also be mechanically or advanced recycled, just as regular polyethylene.
