EU’s OPTISOCHEM bio-isobutene project forges ahead

Although it is hard to keep track of the several EU government-funded bio-based chemicals projects these days, I do wonder how many of these projects were able to reach beyond the pilot and demo stages and achieved commercialization milestones? Anyway, France-based Global Bioenergies is among some of the public European start-up bio-based chemical companies that I … Continue reading »

VIDEO: Audi test drives renewable gasoline derived from bio-isobutene

Audi and Global Bioenergies recently announced a milestone test for a renewable gasoline blend called “e-benzin” (e-gasoline) fuel containing isobutene-derived compounds produced by Global Bioenergies. Around 60 litres (15.9 gal) of the e-gasoline (essentially a liquid isooctane) were produced for Audi.  In the first step, Global Bioenergies produces the gaseous bio-isobutene in a demonstration plant … Continue reading »

Global Bioenergies inaugurates bio-isobutene demo plant

Global Bioenergies, a publicly-listed renewable chemical company at Euronext stock exchange, inaugurated this month its new bio-isobutene demonstration plant in Leuna (Germany). As far as I know, Global Bioenergies is the only company currently producing sugar-based isobutene, a chemical building block that can be converted into fuel, plastics, organic glass, elastomers, etc. Gevo was once … Continue reading »

Global Bioenergies advances bio-isobutene commercialization

Because I like posting videos, here’s one that was just published by France-based Global Bioenergies, which is currently building its new bio-isobutene demonstration plant at Leuna, a German petrochemical/refining complex. The first run on the demo plant is expected this autumn. Global Bioenergies also recently announced a EUR 9 million funding received under the Investissements … Continue reading »

Global Bioenergies, Cristal Union in bio-isobutene JV

France-based Global Bioenergies is on a speedy roll when it comes to commercializing its bio-isobutene product. The company announced today that it has formed IBN-One, a joint venture with major European agro-industrial company, Cristal Union, to build and operate the first plant in France, with a capacity of 50 ktpa, that will convert sugar to … Continue reading »

Global Bioenergies hits bio-methacrylic acid milestone

So while the bio-acrylic acid development and commercialization seem to have stalled a bit (see my recent post), France-based Global Bioenergies announced that it has reached its first milestone in the development of bio-based methacrylic acid (trademarked under BioMA+) using renewable isobutene feedstock.  Methacrylic acid is a key intermediate in acrylic paints. This milestone resulted … Continue reading »

Global Bioenergies produces isobutene in pilot scale

Global Bioenergies announces having successfully carried out the first isobutene production trial in its industrial pilot of Pomacle-Bazancourt. Delivered on the Pomacle-Bazancourt site in July, the industrial pilot installation has since been taken through a series of mechanical and functional validations. A production run was initiated on November 3rd, 2014, and resulted in the very first production of fermentative isobutene in … Continue reading »

Global Bioenergies commercialization in momentum

France-based renewable chemicals company, Global Bioenergies, has speeded up its commercialization plans as it sets up its new industrial fermentation pilot unit in Pomacle, France, which is expected to be commissioned by the end of September, and be ready for a first fermentation run producing bio-based isobutene by the end of the year. The pilot … Continue reading »

Global Bioenergies gets Australia patents

Australian Intellectual Property Office has granted two patents – AU2009265373 and AU2010297362, to Global Bioenergies that protect key steps of its process for converting renewable resources into isobutene. Each of the granted patents protects one essential enzymatic reaction of the isobutene production pathway constructed by Global Bioenergies. The particularity of this process is that isobutene is directly … Continue reading »

Global Bioenergies picks Linde for pilot plant

My apologies for the sparse news as I just got back from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, covering its 25th Palm and Lauric Oils conference last week. I have some news about Emery Oleochemicals’ downstream activities (such as natural-based polyols, agrochemicals, lubricants, etc.) as well as interesting tidbits from the Malaysian Biotech Corporation although these news tidbits … Continue reading »
